Viewing Event Record: The privy council advises London authorities to restrict playhouses and other venues when the plague threatens

Abstract

In a letter to the lord mayor and aldermen of the city of London, the privy council forbids public assemblies – including 'plaies baiting of beares, bulls' – as a response to the increase and persistence of the plague. It provides for increased surveillance of the sites where such activities normally occur, and the imprisonment of any parties that 'offer to plaie, beate beares of bulles bowle, &c.,' against the prohibition.
