Abstract

Following his arrest at the Phœnix for performing a play before the plague was over, Christopher Beeston addresses a petition to the Privy Council. Anxious to test the progress of the young company assembled at his majesty's request, Beeston explains, he invited a small group of noblemen to see them perform. He apologizes for his actions, begs pardon, and promises not to repeat the mistake.
