Key Terms

The terms included below are ones that either have a special meaning in EMLoT or that require additional clarification.

ELEMENT (FACETED BROWSER)
see Facet.

EVENT
A record of the relevant content and production of a Primary Source. EMLoT is not just interested in the historical details concerning early modern London theatres: it is also interested in recording details about the documents that are the sources for these details. For example, one EMLoT event record concerning the Phoenix or Cockpit theatre contains information about the apprentice riot at the Cockpit by recording that we know about this riot (in part) from a letter John Chamberlain wrote to Dudley Carleton.

FACET (FACETED BROWSER)
A facet is one of the lists of standardized terminology that enable effective searching of EMLoT. In the Faceted Browser, facets are grouped under the following categories: Document: Description, Citation, Event & Person, and Troupe & Venue. Elements are the items that make up a list and which you can select when performing a faceted search. You can see all the elements of a facet using the Faceted Browser.

PRIMARY SOURCE
A pre-1642 document containing details relating to early modern London theatre history. Only documents that were subsequently transcribed in Secondary Sources are included in EMLoT.

SECONDARY SOURCE
A post-1642 work that contains transcription(s) of Primary Sources. Only works that contain transcriptions made directly from Primary Sources are included in EMLoT.

TRANSCRIPTION RECORD
Links together a Primary Source and a Secondary Source containing a transcription (a copied version) of that Primary Source. The Transcription Record records unique information about a Secondary Source's transcription, such as where it can be found in the Secondary Source and the way in which the Primary Source was transcribed and cited.
