Viewing Event Record: Theatres proliferate in 1620s London

Abstract

William Prynne complains of the proliferation of theatres in London, which, along with the proliferation of printed plays, has motivated him to compile and publish his massive anti-theatrical polemic. Two 'old playhouses,' the Fortune and Red Bull, have recently been re-edified, and a new one has been built in Whitefriars, bringing the total number of operating theatres to six.
