Abstract

James I issues a royal patent to Philip Henslowe and Edward Alleyn for the 'office of Cheefe Master, overseer and ruler of our beares, bulls and mastiffe dogges', including rights 'to take up and kepe for our service, pastyme and sport any mastife dogge or dogges and mastife bitches, beares, [and] bulls', and to license and appoint baiting activities at their discretion.
