Viewing Event Record: Traffic congestion in London is terrible; plays are one of the leading causes

Abstract

Henry Peacham describes the traffic congestion in central London as a result of the increase in hackney coaches. The Blackfriars theatre, he notes, is one of the most common places for 'stoppages,' 'especially when the Play is done.' Coaches also crowd Whitehall when a Masque is being performed, and the city generally when there is a new play at one of the playhouses.
