By John Manningham's account, an audience member was so taken with Burbage during the run of Shakespeare's 'Richard III,' that she invited him to visit her on the evening following a performance; he was to announce himself as Richard III. Shakespeare overheard the conversation, hurried ahead of his fellow actor, and 'was intertained and at his game ere Burbidge came.' When Burbage finally arrived, and gave himself at the door as 'Richard III,' Shakespeare returned that 'William the Conqueror was before Richard the Third.'
