John Chamberlain writes to Ralph Winwood from London, 8 July, 1613, of the burning of the Globe: 'which fell out by a peale of chambers … the tampin or stoppell of one of them lighting in the thatch that covered the house, burned yt downe to the ground in lesse then two howres.' It is a marvel, he observes, that the people therein came to so little harm, 'having but two narrow doores to get out.'
