Paul Hentzner, a traveller in England, observes that there are a number of theatres outside the city of London -- all wooden -- 'in which English actors perform comedies and tragedies, usually on single days, to a great crowd of men.' Their acrobatics and 'sweet music' draw great applause. Hentzner seems to refer obliquely to the Swan when he describes a royal ship 'not far from one of these theatres.'
