Abstract

The opening lines of the printer's address to the reader in John Lyly's Endymion, published in 1591, suggests the playhouse at St Paul's is closed: 'Since the Plaies in Paules were dissolved, there are certaine Commedies come to my handes by chaunce, which were presented before her Maiestie at severall times by the children of Paules.'
