A bill of complaint in a lawsuit of 1647 records that on 9 October 1609, John Best, grocer, acquired the property upon which the Phoenix/Cockpit theatre was subsequently built. Best himself built a number of tenements and messuages, including one where William Sherlock once dwelt and John Rhodes now [1647] dwells.
