The Privy Council writes to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen concerning the restraint of playing in and around the City. It acknowledges the receipt of a letter complaining of the abuses generated by plays and playhouses, and notes that such abuses would have ceased had their order of the preceding summer been followed. The Council blames the continuing problems primarily on the negligence of the Middlesex and Surrey justices, but also notes that it would like to see more evidence that the Lord Mayor and Aldermen have obeyed the order. The Council reiterates the order, first given 22 June 1600, to limit the number of allowed playhouses to two.
